Discussion:
Migrating from SBS2000 to Windows 2008 Standard
(too old to reply)

Hey all,

We currently have one SBS 2000 server, which acts as the following

DHCP server
DNS server
Domain Controller
Exchange 2000

We have currently got a Windows 2008 standard server has yet to be deployed
and plan to have Exchange 2007 installed. I have read that this is a definite
no no.

Is there a supported method of migrating from Windows SBS 2000 to Windows
Server 2008 standard? Or will I have to migrate to 2003 before I move to 2008/

Many thanks,

Luke

There are no documented, supported scenarios to go from SBS 2000 to SBS 2008
or 2008 standard.

I have heard the same thing. Going from 2000 to 2003 then to 2008 is
what I have been told is the best method. We are planning on using the
SWING method, apparently it is pretty easy to do. www.sbsmigration.com

Probably depends on how many users
Swing Migration is a great tool, but he doesn't (or didn't a couple weeks back) have a migration kit to go from 2000 to 2008 or from 2003 to 2008

Since you are looking at new hardware to get to SBS 2008, for 5 users, fresh install is probably the best option. 5-10 users, depends

Ok. Well I have my SBS2000 obviously running as a domain controller now and
is also running Exchange 2000.

I will be bringing into the domain a windows 2003 server to act as a go
between for the migation but will not have it on the domain permanently. Once
the 2003 server is the Domain Controller, can I move mailboxes from exchange
2000 straight to 2007? Or do I have to migrate exchange over to 2003 as well?

By the way, I work in London, UK! Cheers for your help on this and do find
this very strange that 2003 is need for the migration as there must be 1000's
of business still running one SBS2000 and want to move to 2008!!!

Thanks again!

You're actually better off waiting on this right now
Microsoft is working on documentation for the SBS 2000 to SBS 2008
migration, but it is not out yet. I don't believe you can move mailboxes
from Exchange 2000 to 2007 directly.

You could export them to .pst and then import back in.

But even with a standard win2k3 server as a DC, still not a
documented/supported migration at this time.
And I doubt it's 1000's, probably more like 100's

Just a note from South Africa... Please reconsider your statement:
"And I doubt it's 1000's, probably more like 100's"
Are you maybe only counting 1 city and forgetting that there are 100's of
countries with 100's of cities and 1000's of businesses?

It would be in MS's interest to hurry up with the documentation.
Migrating all the silly little SBS2000 installations are about to become a
very BIG headache.

I support clients in the second largest Metropolitan area in Missouri as
well as lead the SBS User Group in this area
there are not hundreds of SBS 2000 systems in this area, so my "view" is a
bit bigger than 1 city, but even if the number is larger, I'd still venture
to say there are more SBS 2003 systems out there than 2000, if for no other
reason than RWW.
Certainly a compelling reason for the vast number of upgrades in this area.
Any software company I've ever dealt with always develops for the most
recent to the newest version first...then to one version before that, maybe.
Without question there are even still SBS 4.5 systems out there. But don't
think we'll see anything for them. Last Thursday Microsoft released version
2 of the migration documents for migrating from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008. That
should tell you where the effort is being concentrated. The updated
version is here

The subject of this thread is migrating SBS 2000 to Win 2008. You're now

At $200 I do not think Swing is affordable. Especially not when you consider
that most discover they need it once it is already too late and the customer
wont pay for more surprises.

Anyway the swing kit for 2008 isn't done yet. Just ask around.

"And I doubt it's 1000's, probably more like 100's"
Are you maybe only counting 1 city and forgetting that there are 100's of
countries with 100's of cities and 1000's of businesses?
It would be in MS's interest to hurry up with the documentation.
Migrating all the silly little SBS2000 installations are about to become a
very BIG headache.

Ok. Well I have my SBS2000 obviously running as a domain controller
now
and
is also running Exchange 2000.
I will be bringing into the domain a windows 2003 server to act as a go
between for the migation but will not have it on the domain
permanently.
Once
the 2003 server is the Domain Controller, can I move mailboxes from
exchange
2000 straight to 2007? Or do I have to migrate exchange over to 2003
as
well?
By the way, I work in London, UK! Cheers for your help on this and
do
find
this very strange that 2003 is need for the migration as there must
be
1000's
of business still running one SBS2000 and want to move to 2008!!!
Thanks again!

Probably depends on how many users
Swing Migration is a great tool, but he doesn't (or didn't a couple weeks
back) have a migration kit to go from 2000 to 2008 or from 2003 to 2008
Since you are looking at new hardware to get to SBS 2008, for 5 users,
fresh install is probably the best option. 5-10 users, depends

I have heard the same thing. Going from 2000 to 2003 then to 2008 is
what I have been told is the best method. We are planning on
using
the
SWING method, apparently it is pretty easy to do.

Many of us found Jeff's swing migration kit to be well worth the cost. Yes
he has not yet released the version for SBS 2003 (or SBS 2000) to SBS 2008.

At $200 I do not think Swing is affordable. Especially not when you consider
that most discover they need it once it is already too late and the customer
wont pay for more surprises.
Anyway the swing kit for 2008 isn't done yet. Just ask around.

The subject of this thread is migrating SBS 2000 to Win 2008. You're now
asking about upgrading from SBS 2000 to SBS 2003? If so there has long been
a method out there to do a migration (not upgrade). Its the swing migration
as found at www.sbsmigration.com and its well worth the small cost involved.

Chris,
Thanks for responding.
If you do come across a SBS 2K to SBS2K3 upgrade doc, please post it here...
