I support clients in the second largest Metropolitan area in Missouri as
well as lead the SBS User Group in this area
there are not hundreds of SBS 2000 systems in this area, so my "view" is a
bit bigger than 1 city, but even if the number is larger, I'd still venture
to say there are more SBS 2003 systems out there than 2000, if for no other
reason than RWW.
Certainly a compelling reason for the vast number of upgrades in this area.
Any software company I've ever dealt with always develops for the most
recent to the newest version first...then to one version before that, maybe.
Without question there are even still SBS 4.5 systems out there. But don't
think we'll see anything for them. Last Thursday Microsoft released version
2 of the migration documents for migrating from SBS 2003 to SBS 2008. That
should tell you where the effort is being concentrated. The updated
version is here

"And I doubt it's 1000's, probably more like 100's"
Are you maybe only counting 1 city and forgetting that there are 100's of
countries with 100's of cities and 1000's of businesses?
It would be in MS's interest to hurry up with the documentation.
Migrating all the silly little SBS2000 installations are about to become a
very BIG headache.
Post by Cris Hanna [SBS MVP]You're actually better off waiting on this right now
Microsoft is working on documentation for the SBS 2000 to SBS 2008
migration, but it is not out yet. I don't believe you can move mailboxes
from Exchange 2000 to 2007 directly.
You could export them to .pst and then import back in.
But even with a standard win2k3 server as a DC, still not a
documented/supported migration at this time.
And I doubt it's 1000's, probably more like 100's

Post by Luke ChalmersOk. Well I have my SBS2000 obviously running as a domain controller now and
is also running Exchange 2000.
I will be bringing into the domain a windows 2003 server to act as a go
between for the migation but will not have it on the domain
permanently.
Once
the 2003 server is the Domain Controller, can I move mailboxes from exchange
2000 straight to 2007? Or do I have to migrate exchange over to 2003 as well?
By the way, I work in London, UK! Cheers for your help on this and do find
this very strange that 2003 is need for the migration as there must be 1000's
of business still running one SBS2000 and want to move to 2008!!!
Thanks again!
Luke
Post by Cris Hanna [SBS - MVP]Probably depends on how many users
Swing Migration is a great tool, but he doesn't (or didn't a couple weeks
back) have a migration kit to go from 2000 to 2008 or from 2003 to 2008
Since you are looking at new hardware to get to SBS 2008, for 5 users,
fresh install is probably the best option. 5-10 users, depends

I have heard the same thing. Going from 2000 to 2003 then to 2008 is
what I have been told is the best method. We are planning on using the
SWING method, apparently it is pretty easy to do.
